BUCHAREST, Romania - A couple of bears caused quite a stir Thursday in the central Romanian city of Brasov.
The mother bear and her young cub were first spotted wandering through gardens and breaking fences in search of food in the downtown area.
Traffic was stopped for about two hours as a rescue team tried coax the animals back to the wilderness.
Officials finally decided to tranquilize the mother with a dart gun after the duo climbed the stairs of a four-storey building and made their way onto the roof.
Once she was asleep, the rescue team removed the mother and cub from the roof and took them to a local zoo.
Officials say both animals will be sent to a nearby bear reserve.
"The bear cub was very small and could not keep up with its mum, and she did not want to go back to the forest without it," said Flavius Barbulescu, head of the animal protection service.
Brasov, some 150 kilometres northwest of Bucharest, is one of Romania's largest cities and a popular tourist destination.
Sightings of bears are common, especially in the district of Racadau, where the animals rummage through garbage containers in search for food.
Thursday's adventure was the second in recent weeks in downtown Brasov. Romania is home to about half of Europe's brown bears.
